Fungal Acne

Fungal Acne, also known as yeast pimples, Malassezia and pityrosporum follicullitis, are small pimples caused by too much yeast infecting the hair follicles. The small pimples itch and mainly occur on the hairline, jawline, forehead, and cheeks. They are often about the same color as the skin or a bit redder. The bumps give a texture to the skin that you cannot squeeze. If you have a white head, you can try to squeeze them out, but you will soon notice that they will be back in no time.

Fungal acne is regularly compared to normal (bacterial) acne, but nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, fungal acne tends not to respond to typical bacterial acne treatments. As a result, you may be using the wrong products to treat this type of acne.

Useful tips:

  1. Only use products that are suitable for fungal acne, so you will see that the production of these bumps will decrease considerably. Avoid products with Esters, Fatty Acids, and Lipids. Oil based cleansers and balms, greasy moisturizers or facial oils are a real no-go!
  2. Try to avoid damp places, as humidity can also be a trigger for fungal acne.
  3. Use calming products. Active substances can irritate the bumps, making them worse.
  4. Use one of the handy tools to automatically check ingredients, such as: Sezia & SkinSort Fungal Acne Checker
