What is TPO and why is it no longer in your gel polish?
- 1 min reading time
TPO in gel polish, you have probably seen it before. Maybe on TikTok, in the salon or on the label of your favourite colour. And honestly? It raises questions. What does it do in your polish and why is it now banned in the EU? Let’s explain.
What is TPO?
TPO is an ingredient that was widely used in gel polish to help it cure quickly under a LED or UV lamp. On the ingredient list it appears as Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate. It is effective but can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Research also showed that incorrect repeated use may affect fertility. That is why TPO has been banned in cosmetics in the EU since 1 September 2025.
Is TPO the same as HEMA?
They are often mentioned together but they are different ingredients. TPO speeds up curing while HEMA improves adhesion and durability in gel polish and nail polish. TPO is found in gel polish, HEMA can be in both. Always apply gel polish only to your nails and avoid skin contact.
What is the difference between gel polish with and without TPO?
The main difference is curing time. A TPO formula cures in 30 to 60 seconds. A TPO free formula needs 60 to 90 seconds, or 90 to 120 seconds for dark shades. TPO is often replaced by TPO L. TPO L works well but cures more slowly. Use a lamp with at least 48 watts and apply gel polish in thin layers.
How do you know if your gel polish contains TPO?
Check the ingredient list. TPO is listed as Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate. TPO L appears as Ethyl Trimethylolpropane Triacrylate. Some brands clearly mention if their gel polish is TPO free.
How to apply gel polish safely
Apply thin layers, use a powerful lamp and avoid getting polish on your skin. Let every layer cure fully for a safe long lasting manicure.
