What does setting powder do?
A setting powder absorbs excess oil and sets the layer underneath. That way your foundation lasts longer and your skin gets an even, soft finish. Many setting powders also have a blurring effect: they diffuse light, so pores and texture are less noticeable. Got oily skin? Apply it all over your face. Is your skin dry with an oily T-zone? Then only set your nose, forehead, chin and under your eyes.
Setting powder or finishing powder: what is the difference?
You apply setting powder straight after your foundation and concealer to set them. Finishing powder is the very last step: an ultra fine powder you dust lightly over your makeup to blur pores and give your skin a smooth finish. The names are often used interchangeably and many powders do both. Just be careful with HD and finishing powders that contain silica: apply a thick layer and it can leave a white cast in flash photos. A thin layer that is well blended prevents that.
What types of setting powder are there?
- Translucent: colourless, so it suits every skin tone.
- Tinted: with a hint of colour that gives your foundation a little extra coverage.
- Colour correcting: lavender and violet brighten sallow or dull skin, pink adds freshness and banana powder neutralises dark circles.
- Loose or pressed: loose powder is lighter and ideal for setting your whole face or baking at home. Pressed powder is easy to take with you for touch-ups, but build it up gradually so it does not look cakey.
How do you apply setting powder?
Let your foundation and concealer settle for a moment first. Press the powder into the areas that get shiny quickly or where your concealer sits with a puff or sponge, then sweep the rest over with a large, soft brush. Looks a bit powdery? A few spritzes of setting spray melt the powder into your makeup for a natural finish.
