SFX Makeup tips for a last minute Halloween look
- 2 min reading time
Got a Halloween party coming up but no idea what look to go for this year? Don’t worry. With a few smart SFX tips, you can whip up a last-minute look straight from your makeup drawer. From creepy wounds to glitter horror, these tricks are easy, fast and super effective. Perfect if you don’t have time (or the energy) for a full glam prosthetic look but still want to make an impression.
What is SFX makeup?
SFX stands for special effects makeup. It lets you create looks that go beyond regular beauty makeup, like fake wounds, scars and skin illusions. Think blood, latex, face paint, crazy textures or a spooky twist on your everyday look. The best part? You don’t need to be a pro. A few basics and some creativity go a long way.
Last-minute SFX products you need
Halloween party and no time to hit the store? Check your stash for these essentials:
- Liquid latex: Perfect for fake wounds, burns and texture effects.
- Fake blood: The more the better.
- Cream face paint: Ideal for adding bruises, burns and bloody details.
- Face paint or schmink: Easily create a sugar skull or zombie look.
- Powder eyeshadow: In red, purple and black to blend over latex or paint for extra depth.
- Glitter and rhinestones: For horror lovers who like a little glam.
SFX looks you can create in 10 minutes
In a rush? Try one of these quick Halloween looks:
- Bloody mouth: Apply fake blood around your lips and smudge with a sponge. Add a dark lipstick and a smoky eye for a full vampire effect.
- Torn skin: Use liquid latex and tissue to create a ripped skin effect. Pull slightly, add red and purple face paint and top off with plenty of fake blood.
- Glitter skull: Start with white paint, fill the eye sockets with black, contour jaw and cheekbones with black or dark grey, draw teeth lines over your lips and add rhinestones around the eyes for a glam finish. Tip: use lash glue to hold the stones in place. For extra wow, place bigger stones between the teeth lines.
Extra tips for last-minute success
Use what you have. You don’t need pro tools for a great look. Eyeshadow works great as bruises. Lip liner doubles as fake blood. A little lube (yes really) on a wound makes it look way more real. Set everything with a setting spray and bring extra blood for touch-ups.
