What exactly is a tinted lip balm?

A regular lip balm cares for and protects, and nothing more. A tinted lip balm does that too, but also leaves a sheer layer of colour behind. The coverage is light, so your own lip colour still shows through and you don't have to stay neatly inside the lines. Tinted lip balm, lip gloss or lipstick?

The lip products sit close to each other. This is the difference:

• Tinted lip balm gives light colour and a lot of care, with a soft finish and no sharp edges.
• Lip gloss is all about shine and volume, and often feels a bit stickier.
• Lipstick gives full coverage and stays put the longest.
• Lip tint locks colour onto your lips, but cares for them less.
• Lip oil is oily and shiny, usually with even less colour.

Which colour do you choose?

Because the coverage is light, you can hardly go wrong with a tinted lip balm. A nude or beige shade gives your lips a bit more definition without it standing out. Pink and peach create a fresh, made-up look that works with almost every undertone. Brown and toffee are the colours you see everywhere and they make your look that bit more grown-up straight away. If you really want to be seen, grab a red or berry balm: those give more colour than you would expect from a balm.

Jelly, glossy or matte finish

The finish decides how your lips look once the balm is on. A jelly balm is sheer and bounces a little, which makes your lips look fuller. Glossy balms give the wet, glass-like look everyone asks for. There are matte versions too that make your lips soft and velvety, without drying them out the way a matte lipstick can.

How do you put it on?

Wear your tinted lip balm straight from the stick or tube on clean lips, and work it out towards the edges with your finger for a softer transition. Two layers give a bit more colour straight away. If your lips are dry or flaky, use a lip scrub first so the colour takes evenly. And because the colour is light, you can happily wear it over a lip liner.
