Which eye brushes do you need?
With three brushes you can already create a complete eye look. A flat, slightly denser shader picks up plenty of pigment and presses colour onto your lid, so that is the one you use for your main shade. A fluffy blending brush has longer, looser bristles and moves back and forth in your crease to work the transitions away. A thin brush then finishes your line and inner corner. If you want to expand, a small smudger for your lower lash line is the logical next step.
What does a blending brush actually do?
A blending brush barely applies colour, it moves colour that is already there. The bristles are longer and more flexible, so they bend along and push the colour outwards more softly without wiping everything away. Use it preferably without extra product and with small, sweeping movements above your crease, not on it. That way you keep the intensity on your lid and only the edge disappears.
Which eyeliner brush suits your line?
With an eyeliner brush it all comes down to the shape of the bristles, because that determines the line you get.
- Thin and pointed for a sharp, fine line and a precise flick.
- Angled if you want to set the brush against your lash line in one movement.
- Flat and small to pick up gel from a pot and build the line thicker.
- Smudger to soften a drawn line or smoke it out.
Gel liner and loose pigments need a firm brush that holds its shape, because a brush that is too soft bends away the moment you apply pressure. That same angled brush is also the one you use to fill in your brows with pomade, so you are really buying it for two jobs at once.
How do you build an eye look with brushes?
Start with a light shade all over your lid as a base. Then set your mid tone with the shader in your crease and blend it out with your blending brush. Build your darkest shade in the outer corner and keep it on a smaller brush, because that is where you want control. Only draw your line once your eyeshadow is finished, that keeps it sharp. Finish with a lighter shade or shimmer in the centre of your lid and in your inner corner.
A brush for cream shadow, gel and glitter
Cream and liquid eyeshadows need a dense, firm brush, because it does not soak the product up. For glitter and loose pigments a flat, dense brush works best: it presses the glitter onto your lid instead of scattering it across your face. Do clean that brush right after use, because dried gel and glitter are hard to get out later.
How do you clean eye brushes?
Eye brushes sit close to your eyes, so hygiene counts double here. Wash them every week or two with lukewarm water and a brush cleanser or brush soap, and more often if you use cream shadow or gel liner. An eyeliner brush with gel really wants wiping after every use, otherwise the product dries between the bristles and you lose the point. Keep the bristles pointing down, squeeze gently, reshape them and let them dry flat or upside down.
