Make up Primer
A makeup primer is the step you skip easily, right up until you notice how much longer your foundation lasts when you don't. It sits as a thin layer between your skincare and your makeup: it smooths the skin, makes pores look smaller and helps everything that comes after it stick around. Whether you are doing a full beat or just a bit of concealer and blush, the right primer makes your look hold up far longer.
Makeup primer: the step that makes everything last
What does a makeup primer do?
A primer does three things at once. It grips, so your foundation does not creep into fine lines or slide off your nose after a couple of hours. It evens things out, so pores, small bumps and texture visually blur away. And it acts as a buffer, so your skin does not drink up your makeup. Barely ever wear foundation? It still works: a blurring primer on its own already gives you smoother skin without covering anything.
How do you apply a makeup primer?
Start on a clean face and do your skincare first: serum, moisturiser and your SPF if you wear one. Give it a minute to sink in, because primer on damp skin will start to pill. Then take about a pea-sized amount and spread it with your fingertips or a sponge over the areas that need it: usually the T-zone, around the nose and on the cheeks. Let it set for a few seconds before you move on to foundation. Less really is more here, too thick a layer makes your makeup slip.
Which primer suits your skin type?
Oily or quick-to-shine skin does best with a mattifying primer that keeps oil in check. Dry skin, or foundation that clings in flaky patches, wants a hydrating or dewy primer that adds moisture first. Combination skin can happily use both: mattifying on the T-zone, hydrating on the cheeks. If pores are your main issue, a pore filler or blurring primer is your best bet. And for redness, a green colour correcting primer neutralises it before your foundation even goes on.
What types of face primer are there?
- Grip primer: tacky gel or serum texture that holds your makeup all day.
- Blurring or pore filler primer: fills pores and fine lines for a smooth surface.
- Mattifying primer: keeps shine down on oily skin.
- Hydrating or glow primer: adds moisture and radiance to dry skin.
- Colour correcting primer: green for redness, lavender for yellow undertones.
- Primer stick: handy on the go and for targeted areas like under the eyes.
Looking for a vegan makeup primer?
A large part of this collection is vegan and cruelty free, so you never have to choose between a primer that works and a primer that matches your principles. You can spot them with the vegan and cruelty free filters in the sidebar, and plenty of those formulas are paraben free or fragrance free on top of that. A vegan primer performs exactly like any other one, the ingredient list is just kinder.
Which primer brands can you shop here?
You will find the brands everyone searches for. The NYX primer range with Face Glue and Pore Filler, Essence primers such as Jelly Grip and Milky Glazed, and Catrice primers including Aqua Splash Grip, Glam In Gold and the serum primers.
