Lipstick: from soft nude to deep black

Matte, satin or metallic?

The matte lipstick is the classic: no shine, intense colour, stays put the longest. It can feel a bit drier, so a layer of lip balm beforehand helps. A satin or glossy lipstick sits in between — colour with a soft shine and a more comfortable feel, lovely if your lips dry out quickly. And a metallic lipstick has fine pearls that catch the light; you mostly wear that one in the evening. Colour-changing lipstick: how does that work?

A colour-changing or self-adjusting lipstick gets to work on your lips with the pH of your skin. In the bullet it often looks green, blue or clear; on your lips it turns pink to deep pink, and slightly different on everyone. That is why it is also called the lipstick that adapts to your lips. Which lipstick colour suits you?

The practical rule of thumb is about undertone. If you have a cool undertone — bluish veins, silver suits you better than gold — then blue-reds, fuchsia and cool nudes look good on you. With a warm undertone, orange-red, coral, terracotta and warm browns work. Not sure, then a neutral red-brown or a nude in your own lip shade is almost always right. And the more fun rules: red lipstick is always allowed, brown shades have been impossible to ignore these past few years, and black lipstick and glitter lipsticks are there for the looks where you do want people to look.

How do you make your lipstick last?

Start with a lip liner: draw your contour and fill your whole lip in with it. That layer gives the lipstick something to hold on to, stops it from bleeding and adds hours to the wear time. Then apply the colour, blot your lips on a tissue and add a second thin layer on top. Want shine, then finish with a lip gloss in the middle of your bottom lip — that makes your lips look fuller too.
