Lip Oil
A lip oil does what a gloss does, but without the sticky part. The oil formula glides over your lips, gives a natural shine and slowly sinks in — so while you are wearing it, your lips get softer as well. Lip oil or lip gloss?
The biggest difference is in the feel and in what it leaves behind. A lip gloss keeps sitting on your lips: thicker, shinier, and with some formulas sticky as well. A lip oil is thinner and lighter, it partly sinks in and you barely feel it after a minute. The shine is subtler because of that, and the care stays even when the shine wears off. If you are mainly after care without shine, then a lip balm makes more sense.
Tinted lip oil
Most lip oils give a light wash of colour: just enough to brighten your lips, not enough to be opaque. That makes them ideal for days when you don't feel like picking a colour. There are also clear lip oils that only give shine, and bi-phase formulas where oil and colour sit separately in the bottle — one shake and you have both. Want a more intense colour that really stays put, then have a look at lip tint or tinted lip balm.
What is in it?
The base is usually a plant oil — jojoba, almond, avocado or sunflower — often topped up with vitamin E. Some lip oils contain peptides for a light plumping effect, and there are versions with SPF for in the sun. Flavours and scents range from cranberry and cherry to honey and vanilla; those are purely for the fun of it and say nothing about how it works.
When do you wear a lip oil?
During the day as your only lip product, for that groomed look without it seeming like make-up. In the evening as a last layer over a matte lipstick, to take the dryness away and add shine. And as lip care before you go to sleep, because then the oil has all night to sink in.
