Glitter, glitter pigments and SFX glitter

What types of glitter are there?

Roughly three. Loose glitter and glitter pigments are dabbed or sprinkled exactly where you want to shine, with a fixing gel underneath. Pressed glitter comes in a pan or palette and you pick it up with a brush, just like regular eyeshadow. Glitter gel and glitter cream go on straight from your finger or a brush, no extra glue needed. The chunkier the glitter, the more you stand out.

What are glitter pigments?

Glitter pigments are super fine loose glitters with an intense colour reflection. They are far more concentrated than a regular glitter eyeshadow, so you only need a little for a full result. Think of the Chameleon Diamond Pigments and Flakes by Naba Cosmetics that shift colour, or the Loose Eyeshadow Pigments by Catrice. You use them on your lid, but just as easily on your cheekbones, above your brows or on your décolletage.

Pressed or loose glitter

Want to keep it easy? Then pressed glitters and glitter palettes are your best pick. Pick them up with an eyeshadow brush, press them onto your lid and you're done. Prefer to let your creativity run wild? Then loose glitter is your thing. Use it on your face, your hair and your whole body, and it also works brilliantly as SFX glitter over an intense face paint or carnival look.

How do you apply loose glitter?

The secret is in the base. Without something sticky underneath, loose glitter will not stay put and you'll be finding it everywhere for the rest of the day. Here's how to do it properly:

• Tape off the area under your eye with washi tape or a post-it, so nothing lands on your cheeks.
• Apply a thin layer of glitter gel, glitter glue or eyeshadow primer exactly where the glitter should go.
• Dab the glitter on with your finger or a flat brush, and press instead of sweeping.
• No glitter gel at hand? Eyelash glue or brow gel works too.

Glitter glue and glitter gel: SFX glitter over your face paint

Working with face paint? Then glitter gel is the handiest way to add glitter. You apply it straight over your design, where the gel holds the glitter in place without your face paint smudging or running. Chunky glitter for festival and carnival

Chunky glitter is made of larger particles that bounce light back across bigger surfaces. Perfect if you want to be seen from a distance, on a festival field or on a stage for example.
