Which brush for blush?
A round, slightly domed brush is the classic: it follows the curve of your cheek and lets the colour fade out softly. An angled brush places colour more precisely along your cheekbone and suits a lifted blush placement. The looser the bristles, the softer the result. Always tap the excess off your brush first, because blush is something you build up.
Which highlighter brush gives which glow?
Highlighter only works when it sits on a small area. A flat fan brush picks up little product and sweeps a thin layer of glow across your cheekbone; a smaller, slightly denser highlighter brush gives more intensity. For the detail spots, your nose bridge, your cupid's bow and your inner corner, use a very narrow brush.
Where exactly do you apply blush and highlighter?
Blush goes on the rounded part of your cheek, just next to your nose and towards your temple. Smile for a second and you will see where the highest point sits. Highlighter goes just above that, on your cheekbone, and on the spots that catch the light anyway. Keep the two apart: if your glow sits too low it disappears into your blush and you only end up looking shiny.
Powder, cream or liquid: what to look for
The rule of thumb: the more liquid the product, the denser the brush. Powder needs loose, fluffy bristles that pick up little and spread it evenly. Cream and liquid formulas need dense, firm bristles that buff the product into your skin instead of pushing it across your foundation. Do you use both? Then keep separate brushes, because a brush that has seen cream picks powder up less nicely afterwards.

If you often do a more worked out look, an angled brush is handy for a lifted blush placement. Using one brush for two jobs is possible, but pigment stays behind in the bristles and you will see it in your next colour.
How do you clean these brushes?
Wash them every week or two with lukewarm water and a brush cleanser or brush soap, and more often if you work with cream products. Keep the bristles pointing down so no water runs into the metal ferrule, squeeze gently, reshape the bristles and let them dry flat or upside down. To switch colour mid look, a spray cleanser is enough.
